Hull eye up Nines Trophy win

HULL FC will send a strong squad to the Floodlit Nines tournament at Headingley tomorrow with the intention of winning the trophy.

Hull reached last year's final with a squad made up of reserve team players, before losing to Huddersfield.

With the roles reversed this year and the Giants involved in the Challenge Cup final and Hull enjoying a week off, FC will send a strong side to Headingley.

JAMAICA RUGBY LEAGUE STARS HIT TOWN

Arguably the most exciting - and eagerly anticipated - side to be taking part in next week's Carnegie 9's are Jamaica.

Rugby League's 'reggae boys' have received a major boost in the run up to the extravaganza at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on 26th August, with news that four of their highest rated domestic players are jetting in, on sponsors Virgin Atlantic, to join the players who ply their trade in the UK.

Vauxhall Vultures' Brian Hutchinson, Edgar 'Shrek' Herbine of the Warriors, Angels’ Robert Rodney and speedster Roy Calvert from the Sharks are the ones jetting over.

Offiah to crown rugby league's fastest man

Former rugby league speed superstar Martin Offiah has been announced as the guest of honour for the 2009 Rugby League’s Fastest Man competition.

Offiah will present the trophy to the winner of the sprint event, which is being staged at Headingley Carnegie Stadium, prior to the Carnegie Floodlit Nines final on Wednesday 26 August.

Rugby League World Editor Richard de la Rivière has encouraged struggling Hull FC to emulate the Huddersfield Giants and use the Carnegie Floodlit 9s as the springboard for future success. The Black and Whites currently in 11th place in the Engage Super League have found themselves in a similar position to that of Huddersfield Giants in 2008.The Giants stormed to victory in the inaugural Floodlit 9s and haven’t looked back since with outstanding form in the League and Cup.

The Dolls will join forces with their Leeds Rhinos counterparts at the August event, to cheer on the 12 participating clubs and discover who will be crowned as rugby league’s fastest man.

The RFL's match officials department  has been instrumental in the rise of 9s as Neal Coupland, Carnegie Floodlit 9s and Cheltenham 9s Director, points out

 "The 9s circuit of events is developing apace.

Without the guidance and support of Stuart and his colleagues we would not have achieved the current rate of success.

At the end of each tournament in Leeds and Cheltenham we consult with the match officials to determine whether the rules need any refining or adjusting."

Quest to find rugby league's fastest man

A sprint challenge to find the fastest man in rugby league is to take place at this year’s Carnegie Floodlit Nines tournament.

The 'Rugby League's fastest man' competition will be held at the Headingley Carnegie Stadium showpiece floodlit nines event in August. Stars from the game including Scott Donald, Kevin Penny and James Ford will bid to be crowned the quickest player in rugby league.  The challenge was devised by the Carnegie Nines organisers who have partnered with tournament sponsors Carnegie, Northern Rail and Totesport, to bring this exciting event to build on the burgeoning reputation of the Headingley floodlit event.

Jamaica Rugby League season gets underway

30th May 2009

The Globe Insurance sponsored 2009 Jamaican Rugby League season begins this Saturday (30th May) with a double header on the Rugby Pitch at Up Park Camp.
 
In the opening clash, Montego Bay Cobras take on Olympic Angels starting at 2:30pm. Following that, the feature match will see a repeat of last year's Grand Final when defending champions JDF Warriors battle it out against Duhaney Park Sharks, who hold the Globe Community Shield Trophy for winning the League last year, kick off at 4pm.

Cheltenham Rugby Festival

29th April 2009

Backed by the Co-op and the Rugby League Foundation the second Cheltenham Rugby Festival was a great success.    The blue riband event, the All Golds Cup for men,  was won by the Royal Navy who over-powered the highly successful University Of Gloucestershire by 24-0 in the final.  

The victory also ensured the Navy's qualification for the Carnegie Floodlit nines at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on Wednesday August 26th next where they will meet the Northern Rail Nines winners and their old foes the British Army, who they overcame in the semi final at Cheltenham.   Success in their Carnegie group will ensure a showdown with the holders Super League's Huddersfield Giants.

The Year of the Nines - The Draw

Former England number nine, Mick Morgan has made the draw for the 2009 Carnegie Floodlit Nines Tournament at a launch event at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

Hosts Leeds Rhinos, have been paired against fellow engage Super League side Warrington Wolves, whilst Hull KR will line up against Wakefield Wildcats. Cumbria RL, Leeds Met Carnegie and invitational side Jamaica will play in a preliminary group stage for the right to face Hull FC. The Army RL, the Cheltenham nines winners and the winners of the Northern Rail nines competition will also battle it out for the right to play last year's tournament winners Huddersfield Giants.

The Year of the Nines - The Launch

2009 looks set to be the year of the nines as clubs await the draw for the Carnegie Floodlit Nines Tournament.Headingley Carnegie Stadium will once again stage the one-day tournament, which last year saw Huddersfield Giants crowned champions in front of a lively rugby league crowd.

Two famous number nines, James Lowes and Mick Morgan, will be making the draw at the launch event at Headingley Carnegie Stadium, where club representatives and players will be in attendance. Former Great Britain hooker Lowes, was part of the successful Bradford Bulls team of the late 1990’s where he won many trophies and was later named in Bradford's team of the century, and currently coaches Warrington Wolves. Mick Morgan was the 1982 Man of Steel and also gained 6 England caps in a career in which he also represented Wakefield, York, Castleford, Featherstone Rovers & Oldham.
